LGBT Support for Men
The MSM group was created as a more direct intervention to the MSM clinic which has been running for the past 2 years in Homerton sexual health clinic.
In this time, it was identified that support for gay and bisexual men was lacking in the borough. There were no support groups within the drug and alcohol services or beyond that. Gay and bisexual men seemed reluctant to join groups offered by mainstream services. Adding to this, the rising problem of the ‘Chemsex’ phenomenon which effects the gay community almost exclusively.
Chemsex is a term that describes the activity of men taking drugs before or during sex to enhance the experience. Drugs such as Mephedrone GBL/GHB and Crystal Meth are used to facilitate parties that may last from several hours to days.
This activity has had profound health consequences for those attending our group. The group which started in July has been very helpful in providing a space for men to discuss their drug use and the impact it is having on their lives. The main themes which are covered are harm reduction, sexual health and intimacy. The group have covered a lot of serious topics such as sexual assault to psychosis induced from hard drugs. This new group takes place every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month.
